Deckwrecka – A Better Tomorrow? (2002) (CD) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

The ‘wrecka — aka London DJ Agzillla — returns to Skidoo’s respected rap imprint with his sophomore outing. His often cumbersome 28-track solo debut behemoth V for Vengeance proved something of a testing ground for this majestic second album, which keeps the angst-riddled tales from the city from grinding to a halt through deft flicks of production that retain a common thread throughout the wealth of contributors, including notable U.K. lyric spitters Rodney P, Titan Sounds, and the Extremists. While the air horn-punctuated guitar power chords that reinforce the gruff growling of Scare Electric in “Vibekiller” or the almost-pop spoken word vocals of Lee Hudson that embellish the title track stand as highlights, it’s the silken R&B tones of Rosita Lynch that steal the show; however, the funk nodder of “Who’s That Girl” and the Silent Eclipse feature “Linguistix” are by far the most cohesive use of Agzilla’s line in soul-jazz samples, thumping percussion, and grinding basslines. /Kingsley Marshall @ allmusic/
