Substantial & The Other Guys – The Past EP (WEB) (2015) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

2015, Substantial, The Other Guys 20.03.2015

The Past EP

The Past… is the first of three EPs leading up to the fourth studio album from prolific, Indie MC, Substantial. This time around the veteran wordsmith has partnered with HiPNOTT Records producer duo and fellow Maryland natives, The Other Guys for his latest release. Substantial’s musical past, pre-Hyde Out Productions, included many collaborations with Isaiah of TOG, which makes their project’s title quite fitting. The Past… features Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Substantial’s protegé, See King, cuts from DJ Jav and plenty of that soulful boom bap The Other Guys have been known to provide. Lyrically, Substantial is as sharp as ever and covers subjects such as the dying art of MCing, dreams limited by stereotypes, and the exploitation of his former producer, Nujabes.

Substantial – Jackin’ Jill (WEB) (2013) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

2013, Substantial 06.05.2014

In 2011 Baltimore emcee Substantial was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give people their roses while they could still smell them. The result is a free project Substantial calls “Jackin’ Jill” – a tribute project from built by “Jackin” music from various Jill Scott releases. This collection of reworks and remixes of her work blended by DJ Jav form a cohesive pseudo collaboration focused on life, love & music. Even the cover art was a labor of love, hand drawn by Substantial himself.

Bop Alloy – Substantial & Marcus D Are Bop Alloy (CD) (2010) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

2010, Bop Alloy, Marcus D, Substantial , , 30.03.2014

Baritone vocals, fluid flows, and honest lyrics over hypnotic melodies and pounding drums defines the Bop Alloy sound. A sound and chemistry that feels familiar yet, one-of-a-kind. Marcus says, “The musical chemistry between Substantial & me easily transcends the phrase “frequent collaborators,” but I think the most unique characteristic of our group is our substantial (no pun) difference in age, but our ability to interact on the same level as human beings, business partners, and musicians.” Substantial adds, “I have experienced a lot of things in the music biz that makes most folks bitter, where Marcus D is a fresh face with a somewhat different outlook. This allows us to find a healthy middle-ground which is ideal for our growth as a unit. Needless to say we plan on making a major mark with this endeavor.”

Extended F@mm – Happy F*ck You Songs (CD) (2002) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

2002, Extended Famm, PackFM, Substantial, Tonedeff 17.02.2014

The quartet Extended F@mm came together on this EP project with a throwback approach and a uniquely humorous posture. Mixing acerbic wit and playful rhyme treatments with traditional b-boy swagger, the crew calls to mind such underground forerunners as De La Soul, Souls of Mischief, and Leaders of the New School. But while the against-the-grain/satirical angle was appreciated in an era where carbon-copy hip-hop had been pervasively proliferated, EF’s sound was simply not compelling enough to truly wake up the ears of dormant hip-hop heads. At its best, this release mimics the blueprint of De La’s classic debut (3 Feet High and Rising), but the problem here is the crew seemingly can’t make up its mind if it wants to be taken seriously or if it simply wants to farcically send up the rap game. Skills-wise, EF’s lineup can hold their own against many of the 21st century rap’s top sellers (a legion that EF quite obviously despises), but unfortunately the beats (Tonedeff, Elite, Deacon the Villain) tend toward the tinny and gimmicky (for example, sampling the theme from Tetris on “Line Drop”). This is not to say that the piece is not without memorable moments, including the outrageously comical (albeit in poor taste) “Pebble Jam,” featuring a faux freestyle battle between an American militarist (“I.W.”) and a Middle Eastern caricature (“Osama Gin Laden”). A number of incredibly funny skits (“Intro,” “Pause,” and “Fin”), the aptly titled “Obligatory Posse Cut,” and a show-stopping hidden track also make this joint worth a listen.
